How I Symbaloo

How I Symbaloo...

As a Symbaloo certified instructor, I’m always looking for new ways to use Symbaloo in my teaching career. After reading Mimi Chau’s guest blog on The Edublogger “11 Ways to use Symbaloo in the Classroom,” I was inspired to share with you how I Symbaloo. For those of you who are not familiar with Symbaloo it is a free bookmarking tool that curates websites, videos, documents, apps, web tools, rss feeds, and social media in an organized and visually appealing web mix. Co-teachers, classmates, and best of all students love it.

1. I use Symbaloo to curate and share websites with my 6th grade team of teachers, students, and district teachers.

I embed them on my teacher webpage. I post them in lesson bundles in My Big Campus, our district learning management system. I love to use them for links to webquests. It’s easy to update and avoid the dreaded “File Not Found” message that appears with broken links. Check out our MSD 6th grade Math Resources.

2. My students enjoy customized lessons plans that allow them to explore topics and create projects from teacher approved resources.

My Social Studies class completed a couple of units on the Middle Ages and Ancient American Civilizations. A student reflection on future projects commented, “I also think it would be a good idea to do a symbaloo mix. We could still learn but have fun...” As a classroom teacher it’s invigorating for students to be on task, collaborating, and enthusiastic about a lesson.

3. Teachers are using Symbaloo to organize and store Curriculum Mapping.

Working in a 1:1 district, my fellow teachers and I are feeling the pressure to create our own digital curriculums and assessments. Our 6th grade Math Teachers have begun organizing  1st Quarter Curriculum.

4. Like most teachers I’m always looking for a way to improve and get better. Symbaloo mixes are a great way to receive and share resources for Professional Development.

The Technology Leadership Consortium (TLC) I’m participating in led by Kim Hendrick, a technology specialist at Indiana Online Academy, used a Symbaloo mix to share open educational resources presented during a class webinar.

I’m currently creating my own mixes to use at WISE 2014 on July 12th and 13th at Northfield Jr/Sr High School. I’ll be presenting workshops on Symbaloo and Planbook.com. Hope to see you there. That’s how I Symbaloo. How do you Symbaloo?

1:1 Macbook Air Launch

Tomorrow is a big day for our class! In the morning the tech staff will be delivering our new Macbook computers. I will conducting a brief boot camp with the students introducing them to the Macs and the procedures for using and caring for them. I will attach the PowerPoint presentation for the children to work with and practice at home on the homepage of our class webpage. There are many interesting links and tutorials in the presentation that may interest you. Please take the time to look over it and help your child explore the possibilites. I'm very excited and looking forward to all the amazing projects and presentations the students will be creating this year to improve their learning.
