Welcome to my Page!
Welcome to my webpage.  I am the Counselor for MetroNorth Elementary School and Sharp Creek Elementary School.

I am available in each school each day to your child(ren) and you.   My purpose is to support your child in succeeding at school.   One of my preferred approaches is a comprehensive school-wide counseling approach.  I will be in many classrooms discussing desired student behaviors, safety, and social skills among other issues that arise in daily life.  I also work with small groups of students recommended by parents and or teachers.  To see a list of small groups see below agenda.  As traditionally understood, as the counselor, I work with students individually concerning personal concerns as well.

A comprehensive school-wide counseling approach can be seen in the 3 Tier approach advocated in many schools.

Tier 1 - My role for most students is to encourage and support. Most students do well when they know what is expected of them and how to fulfill their task as students and school citizens.  Life events sometimes interfere with a students ability to function emotionally, intellectually and behaviorally.   At these time a student may need an adult who will take time to listen, take their concerns seriously, and help explore choices.

Tier 2 - Some students may engage in problem behaviors.  My role as the counselor is not as the disciplinarian in a traditional sense.   My counseling philosophy includes the idea that students want to succeed and do well.   Students, as well as most every one, chose their behaviors based on their experiences and personal understandings of how to meet their needs and goals.   My role, as the counselor, in such situations is to  encourage and teach children alternative positive skills and behaviors to fulfill their needs and goals.   This approach remains true to the actual meaning of discipline which is "to teach".

Tier 3 - Some students' problem behaviors involve complicating factors beyond mere choice making  requiring  additional services and outside agencies.  The counselor's role here remains a part of the support, skills training and encouragement, but will often be coordinated with additional services and agencies.  This is sometimes referred to as wrap-around-services.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
I.C. 20-6.1-6-15 protects from disclosure privileged or confidential communications made by a student to a school counselor in his/her role as a school counselor. A school counselor cannot be made to disclose communications made to him/her in this protected relationship unless the student consents to the disclosure except as provided under I.C. 31-6-11-8 (the compulsory reporting of child abuse).
